Java Department Manager

The role is a blend of software engineering and managing your peers in the same technical department - around 10 Java and Scala engineers with various seniorities.

As a software engineer, which is what you will do for most of the day, you will be responsible for writing, debugging, reviewing and maintaining good quality code. You will be one of the most senior members of your department and, as such, you will be offering guidance and coaching to your peers.

As the manager for your department, which is what you will be doing for no more than a quarter of your time, you will be ensuring the continuous growth of your team, in line with company strategy and objectives. You will be responsible for your department’s growth and the mentorship, motivation, evaluation and career advancement of your team members.

You will be proactively involved in team set-up, in order to ensure a balance between client's requirements, project characteristics and team member's profile (technical and soft skills).


  • Designing, building, and maintaining efficient, reusable, and reliable code using the Java and Scala programming languages

  • Helping maintain code quality, promoting good practices and transferring technical knowledge in the team

  • Analyzing and translating requirements into tasks

  • Creating estimates, assumptions, identifying development risks, proposing solutions

  • Promoting technical excellence and good software engineering practices and principles in and outside of Levi9

  • Hiring, reviewing performance and salaries, organizing 1:1 meetings and other general processes related to the members of the department

  • Establishing and leading towards department-level goals, like developing certain skill sets among department members

  • Coaching/ mentoring department’s members


  • 7+ years of software development experience in the Java Ecosystem; experience with Scala is a big plus

  • Good knowledge of modern programming paradigms like functional and reactive programming

  • Good knowledge of the Java and/or Scala programming languages and the JVM

  • Good knowledge of Unit & Integration Testing

  • Good understanding of software development platforms or ecosystems like Spring, Akka, ZIO

  • Good understanding of RDBMS and experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL

  • Engineer mentality - looking to solve problems and willing to learn modern technologies

  • Strategic vision of department growth & composition in order to achieve company targets

  • Good planning, organizing and time management skills

  • Ability to evaluate, motivate, coach and mentor team members, and be a role model in terms of proactivity, autonomy, teamwork and technical excellence

  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English


  • University degree in Computer Science/ Telecommunication/ Engineering or other IT related university

  • Previous involvement in company events (internal or external; technical or non-technical)

  • Ability to quickly ramp up on multiple technology areas

  • Experience with the Agile methodology

  • Knowledge of Continuous Deployment/Continuous Delivery, automation and CI/CD Tools

  • Good understanding and experience with modern reactive, functional frameworks: Reactor, Spring WebFlux, Zio, Cats, Monix

  • Experience with NoSQL Databases

  • Knowledge & experience working with AWS, Azure or GCP (cloud certification is a plus)
